Drinking Your Way to Success

This amazing line of jewelry by artist and designer Kathleen Plate was really the stand out line I saw at the contemporary art show I recently attended in Las vegas. It meets all my citeria for great design and with a "twist". If you look closely at the gorgeous glass colors of the simple, clean, edited circles which make up the necklace designs you will recognize the colors. They would be beer bottle brown, wine bottle green and finally coco cola bottle wintergreen. So go out, buy some beer, drink a few bottles of wine, throw in a few cokes and then instead of throwing away the evidence of your latest binge turn it into a fabulous inovative line of eco friendly jewelry. Endless Possibilities. 5.5 Design

This is such a clever idea I just want to plant one immediately. I don't really have a green thumb but it seems to me you could have a tremendous amount of fun with these focal piece planted benches by 5.5 design. Kate Cusak who is the wonderful designer behind the zipper pins posted below sent me an email a few days ago and suggested I take a look at Margaux Langes' original and creative line of recycled barbie doll jewelry. Well I had no idea what to expect and I have to say I am really mesmerized by the shear originality shown in her jewelry which gives a whole new meaning to the word "accessorize". Good Design Is Everywhere or Should Be

I was browsing through Oprah's latest issue when I saw this darling top. It immediately caught my eye and then upon reading further I saw that it was actually a hospital gown designed for women undergoing chemotherapy and other equally not fun illnesses. The whole line called Spirited Sisters has been created with the idea that you don't have to look like crap even if you feel like crap. I love the idea. Somewhat spendy but what a great gift if you had a friend or family member in need of a major "fashion" pick me up. Thank you to fabulous blog Designer's Block for alerting me to this incredibly clever new design package that now defines iconic retailer Saks Fifth Avenue. The redesign was undertaken by design firm Pentagram and the concept is brilliant. Basically the design team took one of the original script font logos, redesigned it, placed it in a box and then subdivided that box into 64 smaller squares. Those squares can then be shuffled, rotated and repositioned to create an almost infinite number of design possibilities. You can see a few in the examples above. The designers call it "recognizable consistency without sameness". how cleeeever is that. k

Good Design is Everywhere!

Okay yes, good design abounds and we are bombarded by
the design choices we must make practically on a daily basis
but who knew? On zazzle.com there are literally "zazillions"
of custom postage stamp designs to choose from and then
if that's not enough you can customize your own personal
stamp using your business logo or personal family photo.
Hmmm, I wonder if I should design some stamps for kstyle?
Any ideas? Will keep you "posted". k

Dreaming of Mexico!

Okay so it's not Mexico and it's not even really the beach
but on a cold, windy, rainy below 30 degree day in Oregon
I'll take it. Just looking at the new beach zen garden makes
me smile and I can't think of a more perfect gift for that hard
to buy for friend who has everything. Oh and if the beach is not
your thing try the golf zen garden here. k
